Selemani

Selemani studied at Mzumbe University, where he qualified for government student loans to cover his educational expenses (nearly $2000). He finished Form 6 at Ndanda Secondary School, where he studied HGE (History, Geography, Economics). He was first in his school in 2008’s form four exams, with a division II of 20 points. His parents depend on subsistence farming to support their family of eight.

Shahara

Shahara studied Education at the University of Dodoma. She finished Form 6 at Mtwara Girls Secondary School where she was studying HGK (History, Geography, and Kiswahili). She was 15th out of 99 students, receiving a Division I of 9 points. A serious student, she has aspirations of one day becoming the headmistress of a secondary school. In 2008 she finished Form 4 at Tandahimba Secondary School, where she was the top girl her class. She consistently performed well in her studies at Tandahimba. She enjoyed math and science subjects and also participated in debate competitions. She was 2nd in her class on her Form 4 exams with a score of 22, the best score by a girl at Tandahimba since at least 2003. Her father works at a village health center and her mother is a subsistence farmer.

Sharifu

Sharifu is currently working as a government Agricultural liaison. He studied agriculture at Mtwara Agricultural Training Institute. During his vacations he used to volunteer at the District Agricultural Office in Tandahimba. He passed his form four exams in 2008 with a Division III of 25 points, placing seventh in his school. His family relies on agriculture for their living. He enjoys playing soccer and was on his school’s Under-17 team for the 2007 Coca-Cola Under 17 tournament.

Sylvester

Sylvester has joined Sokoine University of Agriculture, where he is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Science Education. He finished Form 6 at Minaki Secondary School, where he studied the subjects of CBG (Chemistry, Biology, Geography). He finished Form 4 in 2008 with a 22 (Division III), placing 2nd in his school. His parents are peasants, relying on subsistence farming to support him and his brother and sister. He hopes to be a social welfare officer in the future to help eradicate poverty.

Twaibu

Twaibu studies at St. Augustine University of Tanzania to study Education. He finished Form 6 at Liwale Secondary School, where he was studying the subjects of HKL (History, Kiswahili, and English). He finished Form 4 in 2008 with a 25 (Division III), placing 7th in his school. His father is deceased and his mother is a peasant. He often is supported by a relative, who has a job as a driver. He hopes to work in the water/irrigation sector to expand services in his home region.
